So, you have chosen the adorable Shih Tzu puppy of your dreams and you get to take him home flushed with the initial excitement of welcoming a new family member. But once you have both settled there may be a realisation that your beloved pooch did not come with a basic Shih Tzu Puppy training manual to help to raise him.

Shih Tzu Puppy Training – The First Night

The first night can be a difficult time as your puppy will naturally begin to miss his mother and other siblings. The chances are that your little one may cry or whine throughout the night but that is just a natural reaction that he will overcome in no time. After all, he can hardly be blamed for his actions.

Your puppy will need a soft, dry, and safe place to sleep. It can also be comforting to perhaps throw in a cloth or toy that has his mothers or siblings scent on it. However difficult you may find it don’t run to him every time he cries otherwise you will be reinforcing the habit. This is one of the first ‘rules’ of Shih Tzu puppy training. You may also try placing a sheet over his box or crate as this will get him used to going to sleep at that time.

Your adorable puppy will be mischievous by nature, and like any small child will be inquisitive trying to get into everything. So you will need to make sure that hazardous items like marbles, wires, rocks, and any type of harmful plants are not within your puppy’s reach.

Whilst Shih Tzu puppy training be mindful that scolding your pup should be just like telling a child ‘NO’. However, when you tell him NO, you must also show him the correct behaviour expected. For example, if he is chewing up the newspaper, take it away and replace it with one of his toys and praise him for chewing his toy. Reprimands should be sharp and short. Hitting or spanking your puppy is a ‘no no’ as this may create more problems further down the road. It may cause your puppy to become fearful, shy, or even aggressive. Always reward your puppy for good behaviour. Treats obviously make a great reinforcer when Shih Tzu puppy training but so does a loving hug or even a simple scratch between the ears.

Shih Tzu Puppy Training – Initial Feeding

Initially feed your new puppy with a dry food especially made for puppies. Watch out for very high protein and extra vitamins as they may be harmful to your growing puppy. Feed your puppy two or three times a day. You will find that usually after about fifteen minutes your puppy will have eaten all they want so you can remove the dish. As your puppy continues to grow, after ten to twelve weeks of age, you can reduce the feeding interval to once in the morning and once at night.

All of these Shih Tzu puppy training tips should help your new puppy get through those first, often traumatic, weeks away from his family. The wonderful bond that will form between you and your Shih Tzu puppy will last a lifetime.

Hello Again,

Before I start to talk about house training your Shih Tzu Puppy I thought I’d quickly mention that if you’re looking for a definitive guide to house-training, then I highly recommend you take a look at:

==> House Training Your Shih Tzu Puppy <==

Shih Tzu Puppy Training – How to House Train Your Shih Tzu Puppy

One of the first Shih Tzu Puppy Training tasks you will need to undertake is to house train your puppy. Even if you plan on leaving your lovely Shih Tzu outside most of the time, it is a good idea to train them early on where they are permitted to relieve themselves. The last thing you want is to have them making messes, particularly in your house.

Most people dread this aspect of Shih tzu Puppy Training, which is only natural, and try to put it off, letting the puppy get away with much more than they should. But it needn’t be a complicated process… if done properly.

The Rules of House Training

There are some very specific guidelines that you should follow for house training your Shih Tzu Puppy. To begin with, you should never punish your puppy for making a mess when they are young. They do not know that this is a bad thing and you’re only going to scare them, which will make your Shih Tzu Puppy Training more difficult later on.

Secondly, make sure you offer praise when your puppy does things properly. If they do it where they are supposed to, give them praise and love, and even treats so that you reinforce the behaviour.

The House Training Methods

There are a few different Shih Tzu Puppy Training ways to get your puppy house trained. You’ll generally need to stay inside to get it all right, and that means making sure you are there to offer your puppy constant supervision.

* Pads and Special Areas – To begin with you’ll want to set down pads and create special “peeing areas” where your puppy can go. These areas will be marked off by where the pads are. If your puppy makes a mess off the pads then redirect them and then praise them for going on the pads.

The key here is to move your puppy to the pads whenever you see them about to do something. You’ll need to keep a close eye on them to see when they are getting ready to go (which will be quite often as a puppy).

As your puppy gets used to using the papers, the next step is to move them closer to the door and then then put them down outside. Eventually, you’ll be able to stop using the papers outside as well as your puppy learns that potty time should happen outdoors.

* Crate Training – Crate Shih Tzu Puppy Training can be an important tool for potty training your puppy. Remember that no puppy wants to go to the bathroom in their crate. This is their ‘home’ and their bed space and that means they will want to keep it clean.

However, you need to make sure that the crate is only large enough to be their bed. Many puppy owners make the mistake of getting a large kennel that the puppy can move around in. That will only give them space to go to the bathroom in it, requiring you to start over again.

Never use the crate as a punishment either. You want your Shih Tzu puppy to enjoy being in there, so that when you’re cooking or going to the store, you have somewhere safe to leave them so they don’t make a mess.

* Handling an Accident – When your puppy makes a mess or accident, which they definitely will, remember not to punish them. Just clean up the mess and forget about it. The key here is that your puppy will not remember what you’re punishing for most of the time.

Even if you do catch your puppy in the act, they will wonder why they are getting in trouble now, after doing it a dozen times before without incident. It doesn’t make sense and it will only confuse them and create anxieties and future behaviour problems.

It can be frustrating, but you’ll need to be patient and work toward changing the behaviour of your puppy, through effective Shih Tzu Puppy Training not punishment.

You will probably be surprised how fast your adorable puppy will adapt. By using a crate, your puppy will learn to hold its poo and pee and if you pay close attention it will take very little time to get them used to going outside. Patience and persistence will get the job done in no time at all.

Shih Tzu Puppy Training

Hi everyone,

The very fact that you are a Shih Tzu puppy owner shows that you are a ‘special breed’ just like your adorable Shih Tzu. Your puppy is more than just another dog. He or she is one of the family – your baby. Being separated from your baby can be a traumatic experience leading to separation anxiety for both you and your puppy. At best this can simply be an annoyance causing your puppy to make a fuss and bark when you leave the house. However, if allowed to escalate, your puppy may begin to make a mess, begin barking incessantly for hours, or even cause destruction within your home when you leave. Clearly this can be a problem, but one that can be overcome with some simple Shih Tzu puppy training methods.

If you need further help with Dog Separation Anxiety then I recommend you check out:

Dealing with dog Separation Anxiety

Shih Tzu Puppy Training – What Causes Dog Separation Anxiety?

Your lovely little puppy is essentially a pack animal that feels a direct attachment to you, their master. So when you leave the house, it is instinctive for them to become anxious and grow agitated. However, most of the anxiety that they feel is caused by the attachment of specific actions that you take to your absence. While your puppy does not like it when you leave, there is no direct reason that they should become so anxious.

Anxiety occurs because you give them attention before and after you leave or you go through the same routine every morning. The resulting behaviour of your puppy is reinforced on a daily basis so they cannot control their anxious feelings when you leave the house.

Shih Tzu Puppy Training – How to Help Reduce Dog Separation Anxiety

There are many ways that Shih Tzu Puppy Training can help to reduce the anxiety your puppy feels when you leave the house. Here are a few of the easiest Shih Tzu Puppy training methods.

Change Your Routine – A good Shih Tzu Puppy Training tip is to start by changing your morning routine. If your puppy starts acting strange the second your alarm clock goes off, they have tagged that sound to the process of you leaving the house. Get up at different times, get dressed earlier, take your keys down before you leave and wait for a while. Little variations will reduce pre-leaving anxiety.

Don’t Reinforce It – When you pet your puppy before you leave or lavish them with attention when you get home, you’re only reinforcing the behaviour. The easiest way to reduce dog separation anxiety is to remove the association between your comings and goings and their attention. I know this may be difficult but try to ignore your puppy for 10-15 minutes when you get home, don’t pet them when you leave and stop giving in when they make sad noises or faces. This kind of Shih Tzu Puppy Training can be practiced with crate training or putting your puppy in a separate room in your house then leaving and coming back in intervals.

Building Up to Longer Times – If your puppy grows anxious the second you walk out the door, start working on leaving the house for shorter periods of time. Leave for a few seconds and then come back. Dog separation anxiety can be treated with some subtle Shih Tzu Puppy Training startegies by changing your puppy’s expectations for how long you’ll be gone and when you’ll return. If they see you are coming back each time, you can stretch out how long you are able to leave each time.

Being ‘Cruel to be Kind’

Many people feel that the solutions to anxiety are cruel to the dog. In reality, you are helping your puppy to relax and know that you are not only coming home but that you are in charge of the domain and there is no reason for them to feel that anxiety. Using these Shih Tzu Puppy Training methods will helpto reduce dog separation anxiety, which is good for their health – both physical and mental.

Shih Tzu Puppy Training – Further Help

If your puppy has prolonged, severe anxiety problems, it is important to address these right away. Even if they merely get upset and don’t destroy anything when you leave, you can greatly reduce their feelings of abandonment if you teach them not to associate your comings and goings with the pack order and their survival.
